Dental Sealants: Do Adults Need Them, How They Work & Are They Worth It?
What Are Dental Sealants?
A dental sealant is a thin, clear resin coating painted into the deep grooves and fissures on the biting surfaces of back teeth. It acts as a physical barrier preventing food and bacteria from settling where a toothbrush cannot reliably reach.
The procedure takes approximately 5 minutes per tooth, requires no drilling and no anaesthetic.
Are Sealants Only for Children?
No. Adults benefit too — particularly those with deep, stain-prone grooves in back teeth, a history of decay in fissures, dry mouth from medication, or high caries risk.
Who Gets the Most Benefit?
| Good candidates | Less likely to benefit |
|---|---|
| Children with newly erupted molars | Teeth with fillings already in the grooves |
| Adults with deep fissures | Teeth with shallow, easy-to-clean grooves |
| High-caries-risk patients | Teeth with existing decay needing a filling first |
The Sealant Procedure
1. Clean and dry — the tooth is polished and isolated
2. Etch — a mild conditioning gel prepares the surface
3. Seal — flowable resin is applied and cured with light
4. Bite check — we confirm the sealant does not affect your bite
No numbing, no drilling. Eat and drink normally immediately afterwards.
How Much Do Sealants Cost?
Our sealants are £65 per tooth. We advise at examination which teeth would benefit — we never recommend treatment that is not clinically justified.
How Long Do They Last?
A well-placed sealant typically lasts 5–10 years. We check them at every hygiene visit and top up or replace as needed.
Are They Worth It?
For patients with deep grooves and a history of decay, a £65 sealant may prevent a £185–£260 filling — or a £695+ crown. Prevention is almost always the more comfortable and cost-effective path.
