Early Tooth Decay & White Spot Lesions
The earliest visible signs of enamel breakdown — reversible with a structured prevention plan.
Overview
White spot lesions represent the very first stage of tooth decay — enamel has lost minerals but has not yet collapsed into a cavity. At this stage, the process is often reversible with the right preventive strategy.
These lesions are particularly common after orthodontic treatment or in areas where plaque is difficult to clean. They can also appear around the gumline or between teeth.
Management focuses on remineralising the surface through high-fluoride toothpaste, varnish applications, targeted hygiene instruction and, in some cases, resin infiltration to cosmetically camouflage the white spot.
Common symptoms
- White or chalky patches on teeth
- Surface roughness
- Mild sensitivity
- Matte appearance where enamel was shiny
Common causes
- Plaque build-up around brackets or in grooves
- Frequent sugar or acid exposure
- Poor saliva buffering (dry mouth)
- Inconsistent fluoride use
Our approach

We present all suitable treatment options with realistic outcomes, timings and written costs so you can make an informed decision at your own pace.
Related conditions
Cavities
Holes in the tooth surface caused by bacterial acids — treatable with a filling when caught early.
White Spots
Chalky or opaque patches in enamel with several possible causes — each with a different management path.
Tooth Decay
Bacterial breakdown of the tooth structure — treatable at every stage, most conservatively when caught early.
Enamel Erosion
Gradual loss of the tooth's protective outer layer from repeated acid exposure — enamel does not grow back.
