Enamel Erosion (Acid Wear)
Gradual loss of the tooth's protective outer layer from repeated acid exposure — enamel does not grow back.
Overview
Enamel is the hardest tissue in the body, but it cannot regenerate once lost. Repeated acid exposure — from dietary acids, stomach acid reflux, or certain medications — gradually dissolves the enamel surface, revealing softer, yellow dentine beneath.
Erosion develops slowly and is often missed until teeth become noticeably sensitive or change in appearance. Once identified, preventing further loss is critical; the earlier we act, the more enamel we can protect.
Management combines dietary and lifestyle adjustments, fluoride strengthening, and — where necessary — restorative work to rebuild the lost surface using bonded composite, veneers or crowns.
Common symptoms
- Generalised tooth sensitivity
- Yellow appearance as dentine shows through
- Rounded or translucent edges
- Small dimples on biting surfaces
Common causes
- Fizzy drinks, fruit juices and wine
- Gastric acid reflux
- Frequent vomiting (including bulimia)
- Dry mouth with reduced saliva buffering
- Certain medications
Our approach
Comprehensive examination
We begin with a focused clinical examination, digital X-rays where indicated, and a full medical and dental history to build a complete picture of your symptoms.
Transparent diagnosis
You receive a clear explanation of what we find, shown on-screen with intra-oral imaging so you can see exactly what we see — no jargon, no pressure.
Options-based treatment plan
We present all suitable treatment options with realistic outcomes, timings and written costs so you can make an informed decision at your own pace.
What you can do at home
Practical pointers — not a replacement for clinical assessment.
- Use a straw for acidic drinks
- Rinse with water after acidic foods
- Wait 30 minutes before brushing after acid exposure
- Choose water between meals instead of juice or fizzy drinks
