Oral Thrush (Mouth Yeast Infection)
A fungal overgrowth in the mouth causing white patches, soreness or altered taste.
Overview
Oral thrush is caused by an overgrowth of the Candida yeast that lives harmlessly in most people's mouths. When the oral environment shifts — for example, due to antibiotics, steroid inhalers, dry mouth or ill-fitting dentures — Candida can multiply and cause symptoms.
Appearance varies: creamy white patches that wipe off, red sore areas under a denture, or cracked corners of the mouth are all common presentations. Some patients notice only altered taste.
Our role is to identify contributing oral factors — denture hygiene, dry mouth, inhaler rinsing technique — and to coordinate with your GP when antifungal medication is needed.

Related conditions
Mouth Ulcers
Small, painful sores inside the mouth — most heal within 1–2 weeks, but persistent ones need review.
Dry Mouth
Reduced saliva flow increases risk of decay, gum inflammation and discomfort — it has several treatable causes.
Loose Denture
Dentures can become loose over time — structured review identifies whether adjustment, reline or replacement is best.
Bad Breath
Persistent bad breath is almost always caused by bacterial activity — identifying the source makes it treatable.
