Mouth Ulcers (Aphthous Ulcers)
Small, painful sores inside the mouth — most heal within 1–2 weeks, but persistent ones need review.
Overview
Mouth ulcers (aphthous ulcers) are one of the most common oral complaints. They typically appear on the lining of the cheeks, lips or tongue as small, round sores that are painful but heal within 10–14 days without scarring.
Most ulcers have no single identifiable cause, but common triggers include minor trauma (biting the cheek, rough fillings), stress, hormonal changes, certain foods and vitamin deficiencies. Recurrent or non-healing ulcers deserve closer assessment.
We assess ulcers to identify local causes (like a sharp tooth or failing restoration), rule out red-flag features, and — where needed — coordinate with your GP to investigate systemic contributors.
