Causes

What Causes Gum Recession?

Understanding the cause helps us treat effectively and prevent recurrence.

🪥

Aggressive Brushing

Brushing too hard wears away gum tissue over time. It's one of the most common causes.

Gum Disease

Bacterial infection destroys gum tissue and bone. A leading cause of severe recession.

Genetics

Some people have naturally thin or fragile gum tissue that's more prone to recession.

Results

What Results Can You Expect?

❄️

Reduced Sensitivity

No more wincing at cold drinks or ice cream. Covered roots mean protected nerves.

😁

Improved Appearance

Your teeth will look their natural length again. No more ‘long in the tooth’ look.

🛡️

Protected Tooth Roots

Roots are softer than enamel and decay easily. Gum coverage protects them.

🦷

Prevented Tooth Loss

Severe recession leads to loose teeth. Treatment stops progression.

Why You Shouldn't Wait

Gum recession can progress over time, particularly if the underlying cause is not addressed.

  • Exposed roots are more vulnerable to decay and wear than enamel, and decay can progress faster on root surfaces, so early assessment matters
  • Early treatment is simpler, less invasive, and more affordable
  • Severe or progressing recession can contribute to sensitivity, root decay, gum disease, and in some cases tooth loss, depending on the underlying cause

Gentle circles, not harsh scrubbing

Use proper brushing technique

Angle brush 45° toward gumline

Treat gum disease promptly

Infection is a primary cause

Wear a night guard if you grind

Protects against bruxism damage

Quit smoking

Tobacco accelerates gum loss

Get regular hygiene appointments

Professional cleaning prevents disease

Consider orthodontics

Straight teeth = even pressure

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions About Receding Gums

Everything you need to know about adult braces in London.

No. Once gum tissue is lost, it cannot regenerate on its own. This is why treatment is important — recession will only get worse without intervention. However, professional treatments such as deep cleaning, bonding and soft-tissue grafting can help manage the condition effectively.

A new patient gum assessment is £30. Deep cleaning starts from £150 (member price) / £300 (standard). Bonding to cover exposed roots starts from £97.50 (member) / £195 (standard). Soft-tissue grafting is quoted individually after assessment — typically from £400 per tooth. We provide a full written treatment plan with costs before any treatment begins.

This depends on whether the underlying cause is addressed. If recession was caused by aggressive brushing, switching to a soft-bristled electric toothbrush with a pressure sensor dramatically reduces recurrence. Gum grafts can recede if the original cause persists. We'll give you a detailed prevention plan to protect your results.

Gum recession can occur at any age, but it becomes more common from the mid-30s onwards. However, we frequently see recession in younger adults caused by aggressive brushing or orthodontic treatment on thin gum biotypes. Age is rarely the sole cause — identifying the underlying reason is key.

Home care can slow progression but cannot reverse existing recession. The most effective home measures are switching to a soft-bristled electric toothbrush with pressure sensor, using the correct brushing technique, and using a sensitivity toothpaste. Professional assessment is essential to identify the cause and prevent further loss.
