Wisdom Tooth Pain (Pericoronitis)
Pain and swelling around a partially erupted wisdom tooth, usually due to inflammation (pericoronitis).
Overview
Wisdom teeth are the last to erupt, usually in the late teens or twenties, and often don't have enough space to come through cleanly. Food and bacteria can become trapped under the gum covering a partially erupted tooth, causing inflammation — a condition called pericoronitis.
Episodes typically flare, settle and return, becoming more frequent over time. During a flare, the gum becomes red and swollen, chewing is uncomfortable, and opening the mouth may be limited.
Our team assesses the position, angulation and cleanability of the wisdom tooth using targeted imaging, then discusses whether the tooth can be kept and managed, or whether removal is the most predictable solution.
