Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)
Involuntary clenching or grinding — often during sleep — that can wear teeth and strain the jaw.
Overview
Bruxism describes involuntary tooth contact — either grinding, where the teeth slide against each other, or clenching, where they press together strongly. Most people with bruxism grind at night without being aware of it.
Over time, grinding flattens the biting surfaces, chips enamel, damages restorations, and puts the jaw muscles and joints under constant load. Morning headaches and jaw stiffness are common.
Management focuses on protecting the teeth with a precisely fitted night guard, addressing contributing factors such as stress and sleep disturbance, and monitoring progression. For patients with muscle-driven jaw pain, additional therapies are available.
