Tooth Fracture Lines (Craze Lines)

Fine, superficial enamel cracks that are common in adults and usually harmless.

Overview

Craze lines are hairline cracks that affect only the enamel surface. They are extremely common in adult teeth and usually have no clinical significance — the underlying tooth remains strong and healthy.

The purpose of assessment is to distinguish harmless craze lines from deeper structural cracks that may need monitoring or treatment. A cracked tooth producing symptoms behaves very differently from a craze line, and the treatment pathway is different.

If craze lines are catching stain or affecting the appearance of a front tooth, we can discuss conservative options such as polishing, microabrasion or composite bonding.

Common symptoms

  • Fine vertical lines on front teeth
  • No pain or sensitivity
  • Lines visible under bright light
  • Lines occasionally picking up stain

Common causes

  • Normal wear over years of chewing
  • Long-term grinding
  • Temperature cycling (hot tea, cold water)
  • Previous minor trauma
