Cracked Tooth Syndrome
An incomplete fracture in a tooth that often causes sharp pain when biting — invisible on routine X-rays.
Overview
Cracked tooth syndrome describes an incomplete fracture — typically in a molar — that hasn't fully split the tooth. The crack may run through enamel into dentine and sometimes reaches the nerve. Because the crack flexes when pressure is applied, patients often notice a sharp, brief pain when biting rather than a constant ache.
Diagnosing a cracked tooth takes patience. Standard X-rays rarely show the crack. Instead, we use a combination of bite testing with a specialised tool, transillumination, dye staining and magnification to identify the affected cusp.
Early diagnosis matters. A small, well-contained crack can often be managed with a protective restoration or crown, while an untreated crack may progress and force the tooth to be extracted.
