Retainers After Braces: How to Keep Your Smile Straight for Life
Retainers Are the Most Important Part of Treatment
Teeth have a memory. Without retainers, they will slowly drift back toward where they started — sometimes within months.
The rule is simple: if you want straight teeth for life, you need to wear your retainers for life.
Fixed vs Removable — What's the Difference?
Fixed (bonded) retainers are a thin wire glued to the back of your front teeth. You never take them out. Most people don't notice them after a week.
Removable retainers are clear plastic trays, like thin aligners. You wear them every night while you sleep.
Most patients do best with a fixed retainer plus a removable one as a backup — the combination is very hard to beat.
How Long Do I Wear Them?
- First 6 months: every night without fail.
- After that: every night for life, or at minimum 3–4 nights a week.
- Fixed retainers: stay on indefinitely and are checked each hygiene visit.
Looking After Your Retainers
- Rinse after every wear and brush gently with cool water.
- Never put them in hot water — they'll warp.
- Store in their case whenever they're not in your mouth.
- Check the wire of fixed retainers if you feel anything sharp.
If You've Stopped Wearing Them
Don't panic — but do book in. If your teeth have only moved a little, a new retainer may settle things. More significant relapse may need a short course of clear aligners.
