Swollen Face or Jaw from a Tooth: Causes, Treatment & When It Is Serious

Published: 25 April 2026·Updated: 28 April 2026

Why Does a Tooth Cause Facial Swelling?

When infection spreads beyond a tooth into surrounding soft tissue, it can produce visible facial or jaw swelling. This typically develops over hours and is usually — but not always — accompanied by pain.

The swelling is your body trying to contain the infection. The problem is that the infection is in an enclosed space, so the body rarely clears it without dental treatment.

Common Causes

  • Dental abscess — the most frequent cause
  • Partially erupted wisdom tooth (pericoronitis)
  • Post-extraction infection developing days after removal
  • Deep gum infection (pocket abscess)

Is Facial Swelling from a Tooth an Emergency?

Most dental facial swellings are urgent dental problems — but some cross into genuine medical emergencies.

Go to A&E or call 999 if:

  • Swelling is affecting your breathing or swallowing
  • Swelling is spreading toward the neck or eye rapidly
  • You have a very high fever with significant swelling
  • You cannot open your mouth at all

For everything else, call your dentist as the first step.

What Happens at the Clinic?

1. Clinical assessment of the tooth and swollen area

2. Digital X-ray to locate the source and extent

3. Drainage where appropriate to relieve pressure

4. Antibiotics only when clinically indicated

5. Written plan for definitive treatment (root canal or extraction)

After Treatment

Once the source is treated, swelling usually begins to reduce within 24–48 hours. Full resolution may take several days depending on the extent of infection.

Self-Care While Waiting

  • Take over-the-counter pain relief as directed
  • Rinse gently with warm salt water
  • Do not apply heat to the face
  • Monitor — if swelling grows rapidly, go to A&E
